The Facts About Solar Panels

Want to know the facts about solar panels and solar power?

Solar panels convert light into electricity. We call them "solar panels" because most of the time, the most powerful source of light available is the sun. But that doesn't mean they only work when it is sunny!!

A solar panel is a collection of small solar cells or photovoltaic (PV) cells which are spread over a larger area in a grid-like pattern. These cells can work together to collect sunlight during daylight hours and convert it into electricity. The more light that hits a cell, the more electricity it produces.

The size of a solar panel (sometimes called a PV module) varies between manufacturers, but generally they are about 165cm long and 100cm wide. The amount of electricity a solar panel can produce varies even more.

Solar panels are sold according to the voltage they generate, so a 250W solar panel will cost more than a solar panel that generates less power. But obviously, you will need fewer of them to generate the same amount of power!

Will Solar Panels Work On My Roof?

Solar panels can work on a variety of roofs. They don’t weigh very much so they wont damage your roof and they don’t need a lot of maintenance. You generally won’t need planning permission (unless you live in a listed building) and they last for 25 years, so they really are a good investment.

The average solar panel weighs around 20kg, although again this varies between manufacturers Of course, putting any number of panels on your roof will put an additional strain upon the building, but if you ask DAS to install your solar power system, as so many people have, we will conduct a full structural survey and ensure your roof is equipped to cope with the added weight.
